Early sundials will be part of the Mastery of Time exhibit being held at the Biennale 2016.
Planning on being in Paris for the artistic and cultural event of the season: Biennale des Antiquaries 2016? If so you are in for a real treat. This year, for the first time ever, the show — which runs from September 10 to the 18 — is working in tandem with the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie (FHH) to host a thematic exhibition chronicling the history of time measurement and watchmaking — based on the comprehensive watch book, “The Mastery of Time,” by historian Dominique Flechon.
Early timepieces include travel clocks and pocket watches, such as this octagonal travel clock.
A host of artifacts and historical watches and clocks dating back to the 15th century will be on display to demonstrate man’s desire to track time. Astronomical clocks, table clocks, pocket watches and more will showcase early depictions of gem setting, engraving, enameling and watch making prowess. The exhibit will showcase the role of astronomy in history, and progresses through chronometers, travel watches, atomic clocks, and 20th century wristwatches. Visitors will also be able to talk with master craftsmen and watchmakers in the field who will be present during the event.
