Since the advent of watch and clocking making the popular methodology for capturing the passage of time is through the use of one short hand to denote hours and a long hand to indicate the minutes. However, there are times when a manufacturer steps beyond convention and delivers a unique reinterpretation of the status quo and delivers something truly special. With the Jaeger-LeCoultre Hybris Artistica Mystérieuse collection, Jaeger-LeCoultre has done just that. In a line up that comprises three one-of-a-kind ladies’ models and a men’s model available in a limited edition of five, Jaeger-LeCoultre takes telling time to another level.
To tell time, the Hybris Artistica Mystérieuse collection uses a suspended orbital flying tourbillon escapement that rotates around the dial to indicate the hour (which is read based on the tourbillon’s position on the dial). The minutes are read off of a small gold triangle (on the men’s watch) on the outer revolving flange of the lattice worked dial cover and that points at an outer track. The watch is powered by the automatic Jaeger‑LeCoultre Caliber 941, which, given the level of artistry in this piece it is no surprise to learn, is designed and hand-assembled totally in house. The movement consists of 441 parts and offers 50 hours of power reserve.
The 42mm case of the men’s Jaeger-LeCoultre Hybris Artistica Mysterieuse boasts a skeletonized lattice-worked motif around the entire case and lugs. The pattern is carried over to the case front and back. On the front, above the aventurine dial, is an intricately crafted mother-of-pearl overlay that is totally openworked in the same lattice motif. The pattern is replicated on the case back. The flying tourbillon and pointed arch-shaped carriage, pink gold case and movement are all decorated by hand. Additionally, the oscillating weight is skeletonized and executed by hand to a hundredth of millimeter accuracy. The tools used by the engraver allow them to pare back the material as much as possible without hampering the functionality of the piece into an intricate lace-worked pattern.
This incredible piece of art and horology will be limited to five pieces. The intricate lacework and skeletonization along with the dials interplay of light and shadow make for an ornate piece ready for most stately of affairs. The price is available upon request.
For women, take a look at one of the ladies’ versions below. This watch evokes a theme the brand is familiar with: Ivy leaves. Powered by the same movement, this watch indicates the minutes via a ruby instead of an arrow. This18-karat white gold watch is offered in an all diamond model, a blue sapphire accented piece, and this ruby version– each a one of a kind watch.
