Tag Heuer Indy 500 Formula 1 watch honors TAG Heuer’s role as the Official Timekeeper of this legendary race.
Today marked the 104th running of the famed Indy 500 in Indianapolis, Indiana. This year, though, in addition to being held later than usual, the event was totally spectator-less thanks to COVID-19. Still, that didn’t stop driver Takuma Sato from pulling ahead of Scott Dixon and Graham Rahal to claim the victory. Sato also won this legendary race back in 2017 for the first time. The Official Timekeeper of the Indy 500 is TAG Heuer, which has signed multiple contracts to time the event over the years.

This year, in honor of the race, TAG Heuer, whose motorsports involvement dates back to the early 1900’s, has unveiled a special edition Formula 1 watch inspired by the Indy 500 track. The racetrack, founded in 1909, originally was paved entirely with more than three million bricks. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway racetrack has since been paved over (except for strip on the starting line that serves as a reminder to the past), but the nickname, the Brickyard, remains an icon. Winner of the Indy 500 have kept up the tradition of kissing the bricks — something Sato did today for the second time in his driving career.

It is those iconic bricks that inspired TAG Heuer in the design of its newest Formula 1 quartz chronograph. Measuring 43mm in diameter, the dial of the stainless steel watch is accented with brick red color, and there is a black ceramic tachymeter fixed bezel, as well as a black rubber strap. The chronograph times to 1/10th of a second. Just 1,500 numbered pieces will be made, each retailing for about $2,100.
