By Josef Vann, Las Vegas collector
I’m the publisher of both Vegas magazine and Wynn magazine and live in Las Vegas. This means that I’m in and around the best in travel/tourism, incredible restaurants, exhilarating entertainment, and jewelry and, of course, the best watches in the world… all in 2.5 mile radius. Additionally, during both the Couture Jewelry Show and JCK, even more incredible timepieces flood our small desert oasis and a watch “novice” like me gets to fondle pieces with complications, tourbillons, jump hours, fancy chronometers, chronographs and other incredible heirloom-quality watches.
While my watch knowledge is fairly limited, I can absolutely appreciate the craftsmanship, quality and luxuriousness that is commensurate with fine watches and watch-making. Enter…. THE TICK. You see, I wear a Rolex Oyster quartz that has adorned my wrist for the past 28 years and was handed down to me by my father who had it for 8 years before giving it to me. This is an excellent timepiece that ticks so loudly that my wife makes me put it in another room while we sleep. The Tick has been with me through college, law school and my entire career in publishing. It gets a lot of attention, and when I am around watch lovers and Rolex execs, they like to take a close look at it. This watch just feels so good when on. It’s easy to read, it’s super masculine and honestly very timeless.
I also own a new Milgaus that I absolutely love, too, but it doesn’t put the same smile on my face as when putting on my Oyster Quartz. I’ve often thought about trading it in, trading up, going for one of my favorites like a Jaquet Droz but THE TICK will be with me forever, and will probably be passed down to my son. That’s the beauty of collecting watches, and of owning one you truly love.
Now that is a good story!
I admire your enthusiasm for your watch.
