Anyone in the watch world knows that Hublot is all about big, bold, bright and a lot of bravado. This year at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2021, the brand delivered on its theme in spades, unveiling a number of pieces that will attract the eye of anyone within a 50 foot radius. This is especially true with the Big Bang Yellow Magic.
The latest addition to the iconic Big Bang line up, the Big Bang Yellow Magic is a bright yellow ceramic piece. Until this release, there hadn’t been a bright ceramic yellow watch in existence in horology, and the technological breakthrough that resulted in this piece is almost easy to overlook due to the fun and effervescent nature of the watch. However, the watch was four years in the making and holds a patent for the high-tech material in vibrant yellow color. The biggest challenge, according to Hublot’s team, was developing the bright yellow ceramic without burning the pigment during the heating process.
The brand’s Research and Development department worked side by side with its Metallurgy & Materials laboratory to maintain the properties of the material while pushing the color metrics to the limit and at the same time increasing the wear resistance of this ceramic material. In fact, the ceramic is harder, at 1350 HV, than traditional ceramics at 1200 HV. The Big Bang Yellow Magic is also almost impervious to scratches.
The watch is being built in a limited edition of 250 pieces. Functionally, the piece retains the Big Bang bones: dual register chronograph, distinct pushers and classic stylings on the dial — all recognizable to anyone who follows the brand and the Big Bang line. In keeping with the bright yellow ceramic case, the numerals, hands and digits at the chronograph registers are also bright yellow. Even the rubber strap matches.
The watch is powered by the Unico HUB1280 manufacture movement with chronograph flyback and column wheel. In fact, the caliber consists of 354 components, beats at 4Hz and offers a power reserve of 72 hours. It is visible through the skeletonized dial. The Hublot Big Bang Yellow Magic retails for $21,700.
Is there a better summer watch? I don’t think so. As a matter of fact, the Big Bang Yellow Magic brings summer to any environment. This is simply a bold, fun piece that will keep your wrist looking sunny and you looking bright.
