Properly executed, very few horological pieces capture both the artistry and technological prowess of a haute horology Manufacture quite the way an openworked piece does. Being able to craft a highly technical piece of machinery and being able to conceal the inner workings to make the piece largely transparent is a wonder and a joy to see in person. The newest Speake-Marin Bi-tourbillon watch unveiled at SIHH 2018 in a new interpretation of its Magister Vertical Double Tourbillon) captures the eye thanks to the fact that the new , Vertical Double Tourbillon Openworked features a transparent dial for better viewing of the double tourbillon escapements.
For starters, and as the name would indicate, the Vertical Double Tourbillon Openworked is a highly sophisticated wrist watch. To assemble the piece a master watchmaker needs two weeks to complete the movement. In order to display the open work layout, Speake-Marin needed to reconfigure the original movement. Critical to the redesign was to have the two bridges holding the tourbillons from the plate. A 46mm Piccadilly 18-karat 5N rose gold case houses the Vertical Double Tourbillon Openworked. From a technological standpoint, the functionality of the two tourbillons are aided by a rate stabilizer that was patented by the manufacture. The equalizer links the two wheels by a spiral and helps compensate the speed of the two tourbillons in order to help synchronicity which in turn leads to improved accuracy.
Aesthetically the Vertical Double Tourbillon Openworked is absolutely beautiful. The stunning appearance of the open worked left side of the piece juxtaposed against the floating matte black right hand side dial and tourbillon bridges strikes all of the right visual tones. The 3, 6, 9,12 numerals as well as indices are gold coated and the hands are golden with heart shaped tips. The day/night indicator is placed below the 6 o’clock and power reserve indicator is featured above the 12 o’clock position on the right hand dial. The piece is manual wound with a 70 hour power reserve and will retail for $305,000.
As I mentioned earlier open worked pieces are really a joy to view. Costing more than homes in the middle parts of America, the piece is nonetheless a work of art. Just three pieces will ever be created. If you happen to have the cash on hand for this beauty, you may want to contact Grenon’s of Newport.
