It’s one thing to dive, it’s another thing to free dive – without any additional air to breathe. Add to that the idea of freediving in a lake as icy cold and its surface is frozen over. No thank you. However, Apnea diver Tolga Taskin looks forward to minutes like this. Recently, he dove 74.8 meters (a whopping 245 feet) beneath the ice-covered Lake Weissensee – setting a new Guinness World Record. Taking the plunge with him: the Tutima M2 Pioneer watch.

Taskin stepped off the ice into the water without any additional air — holding his breath for two minutes and 43 seconds while he plummeted downward and then back up again in the freezing water. The alpine lake, located in Austria at the base of the Gailtal Alps, is Europe’s largest prepared and constantly frozen natural ice surface, where the ice grows continuously. Under water, though, it is crystal clear and boasts visibility up to 30 meters. This makes it the perfect environment for ice diving. Taskin’s record-breaking dive is not the first to be accomplished in this particular lake.

The Tutima M2 Pioneer
For his adventure, Taskin brought along his trusty timepiece, the M2 Pioneer from German watch brand Tutima. Crafted in pearlized titanium, with a titanium bracelet, the watch has an additional inner case made of soft iron that renders it anti-magnetic. The 46.5mm case has been tested and proven to resist pressure up to 30 atmospheres. In addition to a sweep minute counter and integrated push buttons with neoprene inlays, the chronograph is specifically built to withstand the most extreme conditions. For Taskin’s dive, the watch rose to the challenge – keeping time perfectly.
The M2 Pioneer is powered by the self-winding Caliber Tutima 521 chronograph movement with power reserve of 44 hours when fully wound. It offers hours, minutes, seconds, date display and chronograph counters, including a specially designed elapsed-minutes hand that is coated with Super-LumiNov for easy underwater readability. The watch is further equipped with an anti-reflective sapphire crystal that is 2mm thick.
