Tomorrow would have been the official opening of Watches & Wonders Geneva (previously SIHH) had it not been for COVID-19. So, instead, we are witnessing the digital launch of many of the newest 2020 watches. This makes it very difficult to be 100 percent on target with reviews, as we have not gotten to see and touch the watches in person yet. However, I feel like the newest watches from German brand A. Lange & Sohne will once again delight us — especially the new white gold Odysseus.
Last year the brand unveiled its first ever sporty chic watch — an all new collection — in the form of Odysseus. Some loved it, some weren’t as fond of it. I personally thought the watch was wonderful. With a rich blue dial, it marked the brand’s first stainless steel sport timepiece. Now, A. Lange & Sohne release the Odysseus in 18-karat white gold with an alluring gray dial and — for the first time ever in A. Lange & Sohne history — a black rubber strap with discreet patterning on it.
Like its first-generation sibling, the new Odysseus boasts certain icons of the brand, including its oversized day and date showcased in a double-aperture display. Also, like that first generation watch — which was launched in October of 2019 to mark the 25thanniversary of the re-introduced brand by Walter Lange — it features a screw-down crown and screw-in case back and is water resistant to 120 meters. For those seeking a sporty chic A. Lange & Sohne watch, this new Odysseus just might make you sit up and take notice. Instead of being offered on a bracelet (like the original steel version was), it is offered with a rubber strap. There is also an option with brown vintage-inspired leather strap.
The three-part 18-karat white gold case measures 40.5 mm in diameter and features a gray dial with finely detailed pleating effect on the outer edge of the dial and also on the outer edge of the seconds dial. It is powered by the automatic-winding 312-part L155.1 Datomatic movement developed just for Odysseus and containing a 99-part mechanism for the outsized date and day indication. The watchoffers 50 hours of power reserve and is shock resistant. It retails for 39,500 Euro, or about $40,000.
