This January at the annual SIHH, Cartier unveiled a completely new line, the Drive de Cartier– designed for those who appreciates cars and have a penchant for style and freedom. This marks the second consecutive year that Cartier has launched an all-new collection (in2015, the brand launched Cle’ de Cartier).
In a signature cushion-shaped case with a taut linear design inspired by the interiors of fine automobiles, the Drive de Cartier watch continues the longstanding brand tradition of watches with distinctive shapes. Offered, depending on f the version, in steel or in pink gold, the Drive de Cartier line is powered by three calibers.
The small complication features the 1904-PS MC caliber. It is based on the 1904-MC that was first created in 2010 as one of the brand’s premier in-house-made calibers. It is fitted with a fine regulating system to maintain perfect chronometric stability. Utilizing a double barrel system to ensure consistency of the mainspring torque over a long period. This precise movement features refined finishes such as the Côtes de Genève decoration on the bridges and oscillating weight and polished screw heads.
The Drive de Cartier watch is a simple time and date watch, offering hours, minutes, small seconds and date indication. This is easily one of the most attractive timepieces from Cartier price wise, as it retail for $6,250 in steel with a white dial and for $6,500 in steel with a black dial. It is also offered in 18-karat pink gold for $19,300 (white dial) and $19,600 (black dial).
Also in the collection is a superb retrograde second time zone display with day/night indicator, large date and small second — all coordinated by the crown. The small complication is powered by the 1904-FU MC caliber, which was created in 2014 and is a signature caliber. This small complication is offered in stainless steel for about $8,750 and in pink gold for $22,700.
The Drive de Cartier is also created in a superb haute horology version, the Drive de Cartier Flying Tourbillon. This timepiece is fitted with the 9452 MC caliber, a mechanical movement with manual winding and holds the “Poinçon de Genève”certification, attesting to its fine craftsmanship.
The entire watch is assembled in the Cartier Fine Watchmaking “Poinçon de Genève” workshops, situated on the first floor of the Cartier Boutique at 35, Rue du Rhône in the heart of Geneva. While the look of this watch is truly generous in size and simply stunning, it is the price that will have you smiling: $89,500.
Each watch in the collection features a transparent sapphire case back to reveal the Manufacture’s prized movements. These masculine timepieces are available in 18-karat pink gold or steel with a black, grey, or white dial marked by roman numerals. Up close, the influence of automotive design has an indisputable presence. Patterning of the guilloché dial hints at the style of a radiator grill, while a domed crystal, a counter at 6 o’clock and a winding crown shaped like a bolt, add to the appeal.
Very stylish collection, I love it. They photograph beautifully.
