Roger Dubuis Excalibur Quatuor Carbon

Recently I had the distinct pleasure of joining haute horlogerie Swiss watch brand Roger Dubuis on the race tracks at Las Vegas Motor Speedway — where the brand was celebrating its relationship with Lamborghini (yes, I got to drive an actual Lamborghini racecar on the track) and with Pirelli. Throughout the multi-day event, we all celebrated the Raging Mechanics that represent not only some of the finest race cars, but also some of the finest watches. To create its newest Excalibur Lamborghini watches, Roger Dubuis’ watchmakers worked side by side with the engineers of Lamborghini to develop mechanics and high-tech materials that make the one-year-old relationship with Lamborghini incredibly synergistic. As such, throughout the “Hit the grid” weekend, I got to go hands-on with multiple Roger Dubuis watches, including the new Aventador S (celebrating the new Lamborghini) and with the all-new Excalibur Quatuor Carbon watch with four sprung balances. Here, I bring you a behind-the-scenes look at the cars and the watches.

Roger Dubuis Excalibur Aventador S Carbon ($210,000

The Roger Dubuis Auto-Inspired Excalibur Watches

To begin with, let’s take a look at several of the watches I had on my wrist throughout the weekend The Excalibur Aventador S, the Excalibur Spider Pirelli and the Excalibur Quatuor. One of the most intriguing design elements of the Aventador S and Spider Pirelli watches is that the straps are made using winning Pirelli tire rubber. When Roger Dubuis partnered with Pirelli in 2017, the brands both agreed that the watch straps for the Spider Pirelli watches would be made using only winning tires. Roger Dubuis extended the idea to the Excalibur Aventador S collection, as well. Each strap is engraved with the number of the winning tires and comes with a certificate of authenticity, so that the wearer has a piece of history on the wrist.

The new Aventador S watches feature all-new Roger Dubuis movements: hand-wound 312-part Duotor mechanical caliber RD103SQ, equipped with twin double sprung balance wheels and a stability system. Among the stand-out pieces is the Excalibur Aventador S Carbon watch, which is crafted using ultra-lightweight C-SMC carbon case and features a skeletonized movement. Additionally, a host of boldly colored Excalibur Aventador S timepieces draw a connection between the cars and watches. The brightly colored Roger Dubuis Excalibur Aventador S Blue retails for a cool $210,000 …. perfect for the Lamborghini lover.

According to Dorothee Henrio, International Marketing Director for Roger Dubuis, “We are a serial innovator. We know Roger Dubuis is not a watch for everyone, and we love that fact. You either fall in love with Roger Dubuis, or you hate us, but at least we are able to create emotion via an extravagant watch. We think differently.”

Roger Dubuis Quatuor Carbon With Four Sprung Balances

The other impressive new watch unveiled during the weekend is the Roger Dubuis Excalibur Quatuor Carbon With Four Sprung Balances. While the Aventador S has two sprung balances, the Quatuor wallops it in terms of mechanics. Essentially, the four sprung balances work together and adjust instantly to the effects of gravity on the movement. The 48mm watch is made of multi‑layered carbon, and is is 60% lighter than the gold version. It is powered by the 590-part hand-wound RD101 mechanical movement that offers 40 hours of power reserve. Just eight pieces will be made — each retailing for $417,000.

It takes approximately 2,400 hours to create the Excalibur Quatuor Carbon with four sprung balances watch, including 720 hours devoted to the fine finishing of the movement. Like all Roger Dubuis watches, it carries the Poincon de Geneve sea attesting to its high-standards of mechanics and finishing.
