It was five years ago that Patek Philippe released a surprise watch at Baselworld: a pilot’s watch. While some industry bloggers were quick to bash the design, those familiar with the brand’s history, knew the aviation timepiece was perfectly aligned with the brand’s past. Patek Philippe made pilots watches as early as the 1930’s. Since the release of that watch five years ago, the pilot watch has been launched in other versions and is a stellar success for the brand. Now, Patek Philippe unveils the newest Calatrava Pilot Travel Time.
Inspiration for Patek Philippe Calatrava Pilot Travel Time Watch
Inspired by the original aviation pieces of the 1930’s, the new Ref. 7234G Calatrava Pilot Travel Time watch is crafted in 18-karat white gold and measures 37.5mm in diameter—a great fit for both women and men. The striking watch, with crown on the right side and two pushers on the left side has a truly unique dynamic to it, especially given the large applied gold Arabic numerals that are all coated in a luminescent material — a great look against a blue varnished dial. The pushers on the left move the local time back or forward by one-hour increments, making the watch very easy to set.

The watch offers local time and second time zone indication making it the perfect travel companion. The local-time hand is a baton style solid blued white gold hand with luminescent coating and the home-time hand is differentiated thanks to its skeletonization. The open-worked hand is created in white gold with white lacquer and outlined in a Super-LumiNova material. Additionally, there is a day/night indicator for the local and the home times. It is further fitted with patented screw-down pushers for easy time-zone adjustment.
The Fine Details of the Patek Philippe Calatrava Pilot Travel Time Watch
The watch is powered by a Patek Philippe self-winding movement (Caliber 324 S C FUS) that also showcases the date at 6:00. The movement consists of 294 tiny, perfectly finished components that are hand assembled, and boasts a central rotor crafted of 21-karat gold. Once fully wound, the movement will last for between 35 and 45 hours when not being worn before it will need to be reset and rewound.
Each watch is finished with a shiny navy blue leather strap with white stitching and is sold with a second strap made of calfskin in a vintage brown color. A sapphire case back allows for viewing of the movement. Patek Philippe’s new 37.5mm Calatrava Pilot Travel Time watch retails for $48,495.
