With its newest 1858 Chronograph Tachymeter Limited Edition 100 timepiece, Montblanc brings beauty, form and function together nicely. Inspired by the iconic Minerva chronographs from the 1930’s, the newest monopusher chronograph with tachymeter scale on the outer portion of the dial, features a 44mm case crafted of a special bronze alloy. Additionally, the new sunray finished dial is salmon colored, and features historical luminescent cathedral hands with a cloisonné’ design in gold, as well as blued steel hands for the chronograph — all reminiscent of vintage hues and style details.
The new 1858 Chronograph Tachymeter Limited Edition 100 watch – created in a series of just 100 pieces – features a bronze case that is specially worked so that it will develop its own unique patina over time. It is finished with a cognac-aged and colored alligator strap with beige stitching for an alluring monotone effect. Leather artisans at Montblanc’s Pelletteria workshop in Florence make the strap. Even the Montblanc logo on the watch is vintage — from the 1930’s era — with the Mont Blanc Mountain in the middle of the word.
The watch is representative of the brand’s continued efforts to bring together its rich Minerva past with today’s LeLocle technology. Founded in 1858 in Villeret, Minerva is known for making some of the finest and most advanced chronographs of the early 20th century. With traditional craftsmanship and a vigilant eye for detail, the expert watchmakers at Montblanc have equipped this watch wit h a manual monopusher chronograph, the MB M16.29 column-wheel caliber. The chronograph bridge is V-shaped and has a large screwed balance wheel that beats at 18,000 semi-oscillations per hour. The original Minerva caliber 17.29 developed for pocket watches in the 1930’s inspired this new 252-part caliber. it was in 2015 that Montblanc first unveiled the Minerva Monopusher Chronograph in 18-karat 5N rose gold and housing the new 16.29 caliber. In 2016 the brand unveiled the watch in steel.
This newest 1858 Chronograph Tachymeter Limited Edition 100 timepiece is one of the final pre-selections for the upcoming GPHG. It is magnificently finished with hand-made Cotes de Genève stripes, circular graining and rose-gold colored components to complete the color scheme of the watch. The movement is visible via a sapphire caseback. As with all of the historical calibers and the newer ones inspired by the past, a movement component is shaped into the Minerva arrow – in homage to the Manufacture’s history.
Like all Montblanc watches, this newest timepiece has been rigorously tested by the Montblanc Laboratory Test 500 – also known as the 500-hour tests. It retails for $27,500 and will be in stores beginning next week, November 1, 2017.
