As part of its ongoing efforts to celebrate its 160th anniversary, TAG Heuer continues to focus on the Carrera collection. Today, the brand unveils the all-new TAG Heuer Sport Chronograph Carrera 160 Years Special Edition watches. They are inspired by a timepiece from the mid-1960’s that was a celebrated watch in its day. The “Dato 45” was the first Heuer chronograph wrist watch to feature a turning date disk at 12:00. The new pieces feature the date disk at 12:00, as well.
Impressions of the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph 160 Years Limited Edition
While these watches boast the features collectors have come to expect from TAG Heuer, they are incredibly detailed – making for a rich-looking package. A tour around the dial shows the multi-level dimension that makes it really pop. The outer minute track is raised above the main dial and the angled markers actually look like they are sliced into the track as the meld together.
The red-numbered date on the white disk at 12:00 is framed by a two-tiered window box and a red lacquered central chronograph seconds hand complement the entire look. A domed and beveled sapphire crystal protects the highly detailed dial. It features anti-reflective coating on both sides. In short, for the new watches are a nice value/quality proposition – especially when all of the details come into play.
Like the two previous special edition releases this year (Carrera Silver Dial and Carrera Montreal), they are being made in a limited edition of 1,860 pieces – the year Edouard Heuer founded the brand. This is the third limited edition collection unveiled this year (following the Silver Dial and the Montreal) that complements the other new releases of Carrera Sport Chronographs. Rumor has it that there may be one last release before the year ends.
The new 160 Years Limited Edition Carrera chronographs are powered by the brand’s Caliber 02 mechanical movement that offers an impressive 80 hours of power reserve. Measuring 44mm in diameter, the watches feature either a blue dial with blue ceramic bezel or a white dial with black ceramic bezel. Both are crafted in stainless steel and feature a tachymeter scale on the bezel. The indexes and hands are coated with Super-LumiNova for easy readability in the dark. As mentioned, the date is at the 12:00 position and is red on a white background, a reference to the original Dato 45 Heuer 3147N reference.
As mentioned, the Heuer 02 mechanical self-winding caliber powers this watch. The movement consists of 168 individual parts and features a column-wheel chronograph system with vertical clutch that improves precision of the start and stop chronograph functions. The stainless steel screw-down case back is engraved with the words “One of 1860.” In the center of the case back is a transparent sapphire crystal for viewing the oscillating weight that has a special dedication to the 160 years anniversary. Water resistant to 100 meters, the new watches retail for $5,950.
