Called the greatest game that man ever invented, golf is all about precision, patience and getting it right. That’s exactly what Phil Mickelson did yesterday when he won the 2021 PGA Championships on Kiawah Island in South Carolina – becoming the oldest major champion at the age of 50. Rolex, a long-time supporter of golf and a major sponsor of golfing events around the world (including its own tournament), has had Mickelson on its brand ambassador roster for years, so this is a victory for the Swiss watch brand, as well.
The PGA Championship was first held in 1916 and is known as an innovative and friendly environment. This year, for the 103rd Championship, the purse had been upped and was set at a record $12 million to be spread amongst the winners. Mickelson’s champion prize: $2.16 million. More importantly, perhaps, is the fact that Mickelson’s name will once again be engraved on the Wanamaker Trophy. This win marks Mickelson’s sixth major title. There are only 13 golfers who have won six or more major championships.
While Mickelson, who has won more than 50 important events, has been seeing wearing a few different Rolex watches, including the Sky-Dweller and some Oysters Perpetuals, he is most often seen wearing the Rolex Cellini in 18-karat gold with a white dial. During the tournament and when accepting the trophy, Mickelson wore his Rolex Cellini. Not only does Rolex have one of the healthiest rosters of golfers on its brand ambassador list, but also the brand has been highly involved in the sport since 1967 when it partnered with Arnold Palmer. The brand is the Official Timekeeper of The Open, a sponsor of The President’s Cup, and more. It also regularly works with the professional governing organizations of golf.
