Skip the ties, the shirts, the electronics. The Horological Society of New York (HSNY) has the perfect gift for Father’s Day this year: Virtual watchmaking tutoring. If dad loves watches, he will love this program. The Virtual Horological Tutoring offers 60- and 90-minute courses that are customizable and offer a theoretical approach to watchmaking.
HSNY, America’s oldest watchmaking guild, is even offering new courses that it has developed. One of the best things about this program is that no previous experience is required and the courses can be enjoyed from home without the need for mechanical movements or tools. The courses use slides in real-time and demonstrate disassembly and reassembly of a mechanical movement. The instructors are live at their home workbenches.
Among the courses being offered: Basic Movement Theory, Gear Train Theory, Winding/Setting Theory, Escapement Theory. There are also some more hands-on types of classes via one-on-one tutoring available for those who want a more advanced education. These will cover topics such as Tool dressing and maintenance, Quartz battery replacement, Glass crystal replacement, Acrylic crystal replacement, Observation of movement disassembly and discussion about movement service, Timing machine results and general timing principles.
Classes are $100 (but that is a suggested donation), see the HSNY website for more details. Additionally, the first class is free for HSNY members, and classes are free for students, veterans, or anyone who can’t afford them. It’s not too late to get dad the gift of time.
