Porsche Design — a child of the sports car industry — has teamed up with Dempsey Racing—the Porsche Motorsport customer team — to create a limited edition, track-inspired timepiece. As the designer of the iconic sports car, the Porsche 911, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche was known as a true functionalist and minimalist. When he left the car company to found Porsche Design in 1972, the focus was clearly on producing purist luxury items. Among them: watches. Throughout the years, Porsche Design has had multiple breakthroughs in the watch industry. The brand was the first to make an all-black chronograph, styled after motorsports, as far back as 1972, and in 1980, Porsche Design became the first to make a watch completely out of titanium. These feats, among others, demonstrated not only what this company was capable of in terms of design, but also that it was a breakthrough brand in the watch world, as well. Today, Porsche Design is renowned for its unique and unusual purist design philosophy and iconic style. It continues to excel – especially in the world of timepieces.
The Dempsey Racing professional team, created in 2007, was co-founded by actor Patrick Dempsey, whose off-screen life has revolved around motorsports for more than a decade. The other co-founder was Dempsey’s longtime teammate, Joe Foster, who has raced professionally for more than 30 years.
With this powerful combination of racing and design, it is no wonder that the new Porsche Design Dempsey Racing Limited Edition Chronograph watch is an exclusive version of the Porsche Design dashboard chronograph and a grand blend of Porsche Design’s spirit and Dempsey Racing needs. The watch features a sleek and sporty brushed titanium case that engulfs a matte black instrument cluster dial, accompanied by white luminous numerals. The hands are dark rhodium-plated with luminous white inserts and reach closer to the tachymeter scale to allow for more accuracy when measuring speed. The seconds hand has a red tip for added ease of reading. It offers chronograph functions of 12-hour counter, minutes a small seconds, as well as date indication. The watch is powered by the automatic caliber ETA Valjoux 7753 with a Porsche Design energy-optimized rotor.
Every part of the watch flows just as well as the aerodynamics of a Porsche, making the watch look fast even while strapped on the wrist. It features a screw-down titanium case back with center sapphire crystal. The case portion is engraved with the Dempsey Racing logo and the limited-edition number. Though this watch is born on the track, it is water resistant up to 100 meters. The case, bracelet and clasp are entirely made of titanium for ultra light weight. Only 50 pieces will ever be made, selling worldwide at Porsche Design stores for about $6,250.
