Rio 2016 Wrap Up: From Michael Phelps to Usain Bolt, Yohan Blake, Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson, the Gold, Silver and Bronze Winners are also Watch Brand Ambassadors (See what they wear)

It was a great couple of weeks at Rio 2016, where America came out on top with the highest number of accumulated medals. The Games brought us tears of joy, cries of woe, good sportsmanship and poor sportsmanship, and a host of terrific Gold, Silver and Bronze medal winners. Some of those winners are even watch brand ambassadors. Here we take a quick look at the winner’s circle in three sporting arenas.

Swimming:

Michael Phelps stole the swimming scene with five Gold Medals and one silver. Phelps is probably the most decorated Olympic athlete in history, with 23 Golds and 28 in total. The 31-year-old, who announced his retirement in Rio, is an Omega brand ambassador. He wears timepieces from the Omega Seamaster and Planet Ocean collections.

Track & Field:

There are a few good people to talk about here. First of all, the best: Usain Bolt.

Usain Bolt – the man who made running look like a walk in the park – stole the scene on track and field – making history as the first athlete to win the Gold for the 100 M, the 200M and the 100×4 in three successive Olympic Games. The unprecedented Triple Triple win marks the 29-year-old Jamaican sprinter’s ninth Olympic Gold medal. Nicknamed “lightning” bolt, he is a Hublot brand ambassador and has even helped design several watches with Hublot that bear his name.

Bolt ran the 100×4 with three teammates, who all took home the Gold, including Yohan Blake, who is a Richard Mille brand ambassador.

Wayde van Niekerk set a new world record in the men’s 400M. He ran the race in 43.03 seconds and beat Michael Johnson’s 1999 record by .15 seconds. The South African athlete was seen wearing his watch on the track. That’s because he is a brand ambassador for Richard Mille, and all of Mille’s ambassadors wear their watches during “play.”   Niekerk seems to be wearing the bold red/orange RM27-02 (that Nadel had worn during the French Open). This watch weighs just 4.6 grams (not even 2/10ths of an ounce).

Golf:

This year marked golf’s return to the Olympics after a more than 100-year hiatus. So, when the golfers went out on the course, all eyes were on them. While most golfers do not wear a watch when golfing, this year’s Gold and Silver Medal winners are watch brand ambassadors. Great Britain’s Justin Rose, who has been golfing professional for nearly two decades, carried away the Gold Medal. He is a Hublot brand ambassador and wears the Hublot Big Bang Unico in gold and black ceramic.

Taking the silver in men’s individual golf is Sweden’s Henrik Stenson’s who is a brand ambassador for Audemars Piguet and wears the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore. The bronze medal for Men’s Individual Golf went to Matt Kuchar.

Of course, Omega was the Official Timekeeper of the Olympic Games for the 29th year.
