Tag Heuer has been very busy lately. The brand has had several new unveilings already this year — including its connected watch second generation and the connected watch golf version. There are two more unveilings in the works, as well, and today the brand announced its TAG Heuer x Fragment Design Heuer 02 Chronograph. Working with the “Godfather of Streetwear” Hiroshi Fujiwara, the brand releases a bold yet beautiful new watch inspired by the brand’s motor-racing heritage but with decidedly modern flair, including a black ceramic bezel and a bold red sapphire case back.
TAG Heuer x Fragment Design Heuer 02 Chronograph
Hiroshi Fujiwara — founder of Fragment Design — has collaborated with some of the most renowned names in all walks of life since starting his brand in 2003. He has had significant impact on music, culture and design. As such, he was the perfect person (and company) for TAG Heuer to turn to for a collaboration when the brand opted to created a reinterpretation of its motor-racing C-case watches from the 1960’s and ’70’s.
The result is a nicely proportioned timepiece with minimalistic design that enhances the tachymeter scale on the bezel. To achieve a contemporary and stealth appeal, the black opaline dial features black embossed subsidiary counters at 3 and 9 o’clock. The white numerals and logo, as well as the red lacquered second hand, offer great contrast. The 44mm watch is crafted in brushed steel and houses the Calibre Heuer 02 Automatic column-wheel chronograph movement. It offers 80 hours of power reserve.
The case back, as mentioned, is fitted with a red sapphire crystal window and the logo of Fragment Design. Each watch is engraved and numbered from 1 to 500. Fujiwara also designed an exclusive five-row steel bracelet with polished and brushed surfaces to accent the watch, which retails for $6,150.
“Redesigning this TAG Heuer chronograph timepiece gave me the opportunity to use an existing legacy to create a new one. I gave the design a modern and exceptional flair with the red case back, which reflects one of the brand’s logo colors and also gives it a completely new and evolved character,” says Fujiwara.
