In a much-anticipated roll out of new watches for 2020, Rolex releases five new-generation Oyster Perpetual watches – often adding a burst of color to the mix. Here we take a close up look at the new Rolex Submariner, Rolex Datejust, Rolex Oyster Perpetual, and the beloved Rolex Sky-Dweller, as the entire Submariner family has been updated this year. Like everything Rolex does, the forthcoming watches are truly consistent with Rolex codes and aesthetics – even the pop of color, which the brand has done many times in its past. Here, we offer a comprehensive look at the Rolex 2020 watches.
Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner, 2020
For the Oyster Perpetual Submariner and the Submariner Date, Rolex releases a slightly redesigned and larger 41mm case that might be better for divers because of its size. The Submariner is equipped with a new movement that is being unveiled this year, the Caliber 3230, while the Submariner Date version is powered by the Caliber 3235 — marking the first time this time/date movement is used in the Submariner.
The different versions of the Submariner include a two-tone version with Oystersteel and 18-karat yellow gold Rolesor model and an Oystersteel with black dial. In fact, the big news is the non-date version in stainless steel.
The Submariner Date is offered in Oystersteel or in 18-karat white gold with new dial colors, including black with a green bezel and black with a blue bezel. There is also royal blue dial, again with the rotating bezel with Cerachrom insert. The big news here is the and the new combination of black dial with blue bezel in 18-karat white gold. (The green dial is being phased out.) All of the Submariners carry the Superlative Chronometer certification.
Rolex Datejust 2020
In its beloved Datejust line, the newness comes in the form of color. The new Rolesor Datejust 31mm (crafted using Oystersteel and 18-karat white gold) features a diamond-set bezel and an “aubergine” colored dial. It is fitted with the Caliber 2236 with high-tech materials, shock absorbers and 65 hours of power reserve. There are four other new versions, as well, but with the different bezel choices, including smooth or fluted bezels and the different dial colors — as bold as the aubergine sunray dial, including mint green, white lacquer and dark grey — with a choice of either markers or Roman numerals — the possibilities are endless.
Rolex Oyster Perpetual 2020
A new 41mm version of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual joins the lineup – eliminating the previously offered 39mm size. The new watch offer a choice of silver sunray dial or a black sunray dial. All of the new 41mm versions are powered by the new Caliber 3230. Additionally, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual 31mm, 36mm and 41mmm versions get some colorful dial additions thanks to a stunning lacquer in an array of hues. New dial colors include meticulously lacquered candy pink, turquoise, yellow, coral red and green. They retail for between $5,100 and $5,900 depending on the model.
The new generation Oyster Perpetual watches also boast a Chromalight display so that the hands and hour markers are coated or filled with a luminescent material that emits a long-lasting blue glow in dark conditions.
Rolex Sky-Dweller
A personal favorite of mine, the 18-karat yellow gold Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller dons an Oysterflex bracelet –marking the first time a classic watch gets an Oysterflex bracelet, which is usually reserved for the professional watches. It is an elastomer bracelet with integrated metal blades inside and is finished with an Oysterclasp, along with the Rolex Glidelock extension system. The watch boasts a black sunray dial with hands and markers in 18-karat yellow gold. They also offer a Chromalight display that glows blue in the dark.
Rolex Caliber 3230
In addition to the above timepieces, Rolex confirms the arrival of a new caliber: 3230. Entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex, this self-winding mechanical movement led to the filing of several patents, and offers better precision, power reserve, resistance to shocks and magnetic fields, convenience and reliability.
Caliber 3230 incorporates the Chronergy escapement patented by Rolex, which combines high energy efficiency with great dependability. Made of nickel-phosphorus, it is also insensitive to magnetic fields. The movement is fitted with an optimized blue Parachrom hairspring, manufactured by Rolex in an exclusive paramagnetic alloy that makes it up to 10 times more precise than a traditional hairspring in case of shocks. The blue Parachrom hairspring is equipped with a Rolex overcoil, ensuring the caliber’s regularity in any position. The oscillator is fitted on the Rolex-designed and -patented high-performance Paraflex shock absorbers, increasing the movement’s shock resistance. Caliber 3230 is equipped with a self-winding module via a Perpetual rotor and extends the power reserve to approximately 70 hours. The movement is tested to Rolex’s Superlative Chronometer standards and deviates by no more than -2/+2 tolerances.
