Founded earlier this year, The Unnamed Society is a group of inventors and designers who have come together to create new and highly exclusive items. With a tag line of “Creating the impossible that cannot be imagined,” The Unnamed Society is all about finding unique ways to capture the essence of something in an artistic format. The first effort of this unusual society comes in the form of an item that captures time: a fully customizable Revolver clock called the Bang. Created in cooperation with famed Swiss clock maker L’Epee 1839, the revolver is a work of art and precision.
By recalling the historically significant Colt revolver — which, thanks to a patented indexing cylinder, enabled firing the gun without having to reload time after time — The Unnamed Society hopes to convey a significant message with this clock. “The purity of purpose inherent in the revolver makes it a compelling platform for telling time: it aptly symbolizes the preciousness of every moment, the speed at which it can be stolen and the complexity of what is, ultimately, a simple proposition.”
Revolver Clock Materials
Only the highest-quality materials are used in the making of the clock, and the finest artisanship techniques are employed — ensuring that each creation is a one-off piece. While the first Revolver clock is created in a limited edition of 50 pieces, each retailing for $31,000, because the grips are individually hand made from Big Horn sheep horn, each is essentially unique. Additionally, customers can enhance the Revolver clock by customizing the grip (using a host of materials available to them), the frame edge, the frame (which in the initial series is engraved) and the barrel.
For the gun grip, two different artisans hand craft the materials. Master cabinet maker Cedric Richard in Switzerland works with a host of tree barks (including olive, pear, palm and rosewood), while his USA counterpart, Mike Dorris of MD Grips in Tennessee creates gun grips made from animal skin, horn and bone such as elk antlers, sheep horns and graff bone. The grips can also be made of precious metal and gemstones can be added. Diamonds and gems can also be added to the frame or barrel. Customized engravings are also offered.
Each Bang revolver clock is made using nickel and palladium plated brass, and even features a working hammer. Frame can be engraved or created in polish, satin- or sandblasted finishes. Each is sold with a satin-plated aluminum stand. The clock can be stood on the stand either vertically with the gun barrel facing down, or horizontally with the grip placed on the stand.
Powering the clock is a L’Epee designed and manufactured movement, with serial number, created in an architecture to perfectly fit within the revolver cylinder space. The movement offers eight days of power reserve and consists of 142 parts. The time is set via a sphere with the hours and minutes on it. One turns the sphere by hand to set the time. To wind the watch to full power, there is a key hidden in the barrel.
“Translating the vision of the team into a unique clock calibre has been the challenge of a lifetime and all of us here a tL’Épée are very proud of the result. Working with time from all its angles, historical, mechanicaland aesthetic, has rarely been so rewarding,” says Arnaud Nicolas, CEO of L’Épée.
The Unnamed Society will be creating other objects of art designed as the perfect gift — to oneself or others. The company’s logo is a drawing of a wise owl in flight clutching a key — meant to unlock the imagination.
